TOPIC INVESTIGATING HUMAN CIRCULATION WITH A HEART DEFECT

PRESENTER: AMY PORTER (SHE/THEY)

Amy Porter is an educator by trade, receiving Bachelor's degrees from the University of Alberta in Education and Music.

Amy is a nationally recognized keynote speaker, working to educate sonographers and the public about the prevalence of heart defects in infants. Partnering with two of Alberta's leading Fetal and Neonatal Cardiologists, Amy Porter is the Executive Director of the Tiny HeartsCan Foundation whose mission is to increase the prenatal detection rates and care of infants with Congenital Heart Defects.

Amy has spoken to over 800 sonographers and has been a guest on various podcasts.

GOALS

Students will label and identify the principal heart structures in a heart with Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA) to discover the abnormality with this defect. Using their knowledge of normal human circulatory systems, students will, in groups, describe the action of a heart with TGA to determine how this heart defect affects the patient’s circulatory system and analyze how this defect may be surgically corrected.

Students will discuss the ethical implications of blood, organ, and tissue donations in Canada.
